New Test For Fertility And Menopause Predicting The Start Of Menopause And End Of Fertility

Fertility and menopause go hand in hand, and it is an acknowledged truth that fertility declines in the years leading up to the menopause, so predicting the age at which menopause is destined to start is a very useful thing.

According to a twelve year Iranian study of 266 women, a novel test which determines a hormone called anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) discovered it was possible to pinpoint the age of menopause by determining the levels of AMH.

AMH is produced in the cells of the ovaries and controls the growth of follicles in the ovaries from which eggs grow.

The study was conducted at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran and was led by Dr Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani. In the study, 266 women aged between 20 and 49 were followed through blood samples and physical examinations at three yearly intervals over a 12 year period. Researchers then worked out a mathematical model for appraising the age at menopause from AMH levels in the blood. They discovered that using this technique, it was possible to predict the age at which women reached menopause to within a mean of 4 months.

This could be particularly advantageous for choosing women who could have an early menopause and who could then prepare on having a family accordingly.

The menopause test is unable to predict when women will lose their fertility. Typically this takes place approximately a decade in advance of menopause. Nevertheless, if doctors know the time women will go into menopause, they can calculate roughly the moment they will run out of eggs. Researchers say the test could be extremely beneficial in identifying women who might go into the menopause early, for instance, in their late 40s or earlier instead of their mid 50s.
